Introduction

“Persona Dolls are life-like, culturally appropriate girl and boy Dolls made of cloth.
They are given ‘personas’ or identities, and thus transformed into unique individuals with cultural
and social class backgrounds, family situations, abilities and disabilities, fears and interests”.

Kay Taus, US ECD educator

The Persona Doll anti-bias approach was first developed in the US in the 1980s, and was introduced
to South Africa in 2003.

The Persona Doll Approach offers an innovative, interactive way to raise and address issues of inclusion, diversity and identity that impact negatively on both adults and children. The Personal Doll Approach
provides an effective, powerful anti-bias tool for:
Researching children’s attitudes and ideas
Giving psychosocial support to vulnerable children
Empowering both children and adults.

Using Persona Dolls is an effective and enjoyable way to:
Challenge discrimination
Develop self-esteem and emotional literacy
Raise equality issues.
